Faculty Involvement
Faculty members across the University of Florida regularly teach and do research focused or related to some aspect of sustainability. In November 2008 President Machen announced a strategic initiative in sustainability, with the goal of encouraging faculty to consider developing a nationally recognized interdisciplinary academic program balanced between teaching, research, and academic service, utilizing UF’s already deep resources in this area.
During the 2008-09 academic year, Professor Kim Tanzer, in collaboration with Provost’s Fellow and Professor Tom Ankersen, began to develop the initiative with the help of UF faculty. They held held faculty workshops to which all members of the faculty, including academic administrators, were invited, and developed a sustainability in UF academics wiki to further communication and report results.
There are many ways to get involved with sustainability at UF, including serving on the faculty senate joint standing committee for sustainability or incorporating campus sustainability into you curriculum or research. If you would like a class presentation on sustainability at UF, would like to collaborate with the office on living laboratory opportunities, or have another idea, please contact us.
